Kick back on a Menorca villa holiday

Its neighbouring islands Ibiza and Mallorca attract thousands of tourists every year, but Menorca is still a quiet little island where holiday makers can simply kick back and relax.

This is the view of travel journalist Ross McCarthy, who pointed out that most of the major sights and attractions in Menorca are no more than half an hour away by car and can be visited at a leisurely pace.

He described the island as an open air archaeological museum thanks to its colourful history, which has left behind numerous remnants of past invasions.

It also has a wide variety of landscapes, from lagoons and marshes to sandy covers and rocky inlets, which holiday makers can explore on a boat trip.

Mr McCarthy said the capital Mahon is a must-visit, as it boasts the second deepest natural harbour in the world after Pearl Harbour, while former capital Ciutadella with its narrow winding streets will also make a great day out.

And far from rushing around, visitors can simply wander the streets and stop for a drink or a meal in one of the many traditional restaurants, which serve a vast array of seafood dishes.

Those eager to visit both cities could rent a Menorca villa in the resort of Son Bou, which is halfway between the two.

It is also home to the longest beach on the island as well as some beautiful sand dunes where couples and families can find a secluded spot.
