Festes de San Joan in Menorca
Taking place in the city of Ciutadella on the west side of island, the event is famed for its equestrian element, which sees local riders converge for a noisy cavalcade alongside authorities, dignitaries and churchmen.
Then follows a packed programme of mounted activity, including shield jousting and horse acrobatics.
On the last day of celebrations, June 24th, riders compete more seriously for a succession of titles linked with real responsibilities like the maintenance and upkeep of the church of Saint John.
For a real sense of the festival, however, tourists should ensure their Menorca holiday also takes in the religious aspect of Festes de San Joan.
On Midsummer's Day (June 23rd) this could include a visit to the hermitage of the saint for vespers or a Caixer mass the following day at the cathedral.
Visitors keen to witness the entire three-day spectacle are advised to find accommodation nearby, for example a villa rental in Cala en Bosch, which is only a short drive from the harbour city.
