Experience the Sant Joan fiesta on a Menorca villa holiday
Holiday makers planning a Menorca villa break this summer will have the opportunity to join in with a giant party as the island hosts a traditional festival paying tribute to Sant Joan.
Due to take place in Ciutadella in June, the event is "the most famous of Menorca's popular summer fiestas" owing to its "spectacular majesty", according to the tourist board representing the Balearic Islands.
The Sant Joan fiesta has been celebrated for centuries and is now one of the most popular and eagerly awaited fixtures on Ciutadella's social calendar.
Celebrations begin every year on the 'dia del be', or 'day of the ram', which falls on June 22nd in 2010.
People enjoying Menorca villa holidays at the time will be able to gather alongside locals to celebrate the inauguration of the festival, which is marked by the playing of a cane flute and drum.
Most of the celebratory events will take place on June 24th - the day of Sant Joan.
Visitors will be able to gather in the centre of Ciutadella to see displays of equestrianism, jousting contests on horseback and other spectacles.
