Traditional bag pipes play big part in Balearic music
Music plays a large role in the island's traditions and the instruments used to play the music are quite unique.
Enormous wooden castanets, drums, flutes and cane xeremias are all examples of the handmade musical instruments that are essential to the Balearic musical traditions.
Xerrmias will look familiar to British holiday makers as they come from the bag pipe family and are an important part of Balearic musical culture.
They have a distant sound that always accompanies the popular fiestas of the new holiday season and they a celebration is not the same without them.
A man known as xeremier plays the instrument and is accompanied by a musician who plays a small flute known as a flabiol.
The flabiol player uses his left hand and then beats a drum with his right and together the musicians are known as a colla of xeremiers.
Whatever festival holiday makers visit during the new season they are sure to witness some of the traditional music.
