Temperatures rise in the Balearics, Mallorca
While Britain shivers under cool and windy grey summer skies, Mallorca is facing a heatwave in the coming weeks.
According to Spain's National Institute of Meteorology, air blown up from Africa may see temperatures hit nearly 40 degrees C on the island this weekend.
The maximum temperature so far this July has been 34 degrees C, recorded at Son Sant Joan. Overall temperatures are about one degree higher than the historical average so far this summer. Clear skies are also predicted for the following week.
Local weatherman Agusti Jansa, talking to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, said that the increase in averages was explicable by the recent warmer night time temperatures, with the daytime showing no significant increases over the norm.
Mallorca enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. Sea breezes rescue the weather from the furnace-like conditions of the Iberian interior in summer.
