Sineu market, Mallorca
Bargain-hunting Balearic tourists could do worse than to visit the Sineu market in Mallorca's interior this summer.
Held each Wednesday from 8am in the church square, the market is a great place to find arts and crafts native to the island, such as pottery, paintings, clothes and specialist leather goods.
Amazingly, the market has been held at Sineu since 1306, when it was inaugurated by Catalan king Jaume II.
Its roots as a trading station for the whole island are still intact today: while the market is a big tourist draw, many locals still shop there for food and other essentials.
Sineu itself has many bars and restaurants serving Mallorcan food - known to locals as Cellers.
The cuisine of Mallorca is traditionally very hearty. Based on pork and fish as well as fresh vegetables and olive oil, classic dishes include the island's famous 'frit' - a mixture of pork liver, peppers and potatoes, all fried up together.
