Releasing of the ducks, Mallorca

Though competition is stiff, one of the oddest of all Spanish festivals is happening at C'an Picafort, Mallorca, on August 15th.

A small flotilla of boats will congregate outside the Hotel Sol y Mar and release hundreds of ducks into the sea. People then dive into the water and attempt to capture them as trophies.

Around 3,000 people have attended the event in previous years, whose roots remain a mystery.

Although only a small proportion of ducks are actually killed during the ceremony - with most rounded up and released unharmed - animal rights protesters are up in arms, and campaign strongly against the continuation of the tradition.

The local authorities are defiant and promise to pay any fines incurred to make sure the ceremony goes ahead - this has cost them thousands of euros in previous years.

Bird lovers can seek solace in the S'Albufera Park on the outskirts of the town, in which a huge variety of species nest in the trees, unmolested. In fact, park rules specifically state that its flora and fauna not be touched by visitors.
