Oil exploration across Balearic Islands 'would be a risk'
People planning on taking a holiday in the Balearic Islands, such as to Mallorca villas, have been told of a debate currently taking place into oil exploration in the region.
Sara Pizzinato, a representative for Greenpeace, has expressed concerns about such work at a press conference held in Palma de Mallorca.
Currently, Scottish oil firm Cairn Energy has a licence to drill between Ibiza and the Gulf of Valencia, taking in five separate areas.
However, Ms Pizzinato believes that the potential risk to the Mediterranean coastline is far greater than the chance of finding oil at the sites.
Meanwhile, a recent easyJet study has found that many holiday makers are still looking at heading to resorts across the European country, including villas in Mallorca.
Paul Simmons, the UK director of the airline, noted: "The sandy shores, blue seas and promise of sunshine keep Brits flocking to Spain year after year for a relaxing summer break."
