New flights could boost popularity of Mallorca holidays

Mallorca holidays could prove a more appealing option for Britons this summer as a result of new flights to the island being launched from London Gatwick.

Monarch announced that it is set to begin operating a new scheduled route to the destination this weekend, offering three weekly services.

The launch will bring the airline's total number of weekly flights to the Balearic hotspot to 23, with regular connections already available from Birmingham, Luton and Manchester airports.

People planning Mallorca holidays this summer will benefit from the development through a wider range of travel options to choose from and stronger competition between airlines, which could lead to lower fares.

Tim Jeans, managing director of flights for Monarch, said the airline decided to introduce a scheduled service to the destination following a "surge in demand for the western Mediterranean this summer".

He added: "We already have a successful programme of flights to the island from our other UK bases and I am confident that our new service from Gatwick will prove to be equally popular with customers."

Mallorca is home to a number of popular destinations where travellers can arrange villa accommodation, such as Sa Pobla, Alcudia and Cala Santanyi.
