Mallorca villas: Smartphones being used to gain travel knowledge

Brits who are taking holidays, such as to Mallorca villas, could be using their mobile phones to enhance their knowledge of the destination.

Research conducted by digital travel content specialists Frommer's Unlimited found that 52 per cent of people are now likely to use their device to garner information about the location that they are travelling to.

This is a considerable rise from the 27 per cent of respondents who admitted to the same desire in 2010.

Looking up points of interest, such as maps and restaurants, was found to be the most important function to smartphone users, with 57 per cent using their devices to find this data.

Topping up on the local language, gaining access to itinerates and walking tours and seeking out local offers were also popular through this portal.

Giles Longhurst, director of Frommer's Unlimited Europe, Middle East and Africa, commented: "The rise of the smartphone and the launch of the iPad since our last survey have clearly led to a more prominent demand for mobile content."

Families are sure to find plenty of appeal around villas in Mallorca, with a TravelBite.co.uk writer recently saying that the Spanish hot spot offers "a unique perspective on life".
