Mallorca villa occupants soon to take in artificial reef?
Brits booking Mallorca villas in the future could be able to check out an artificial reef during their stay.
A plan was first proposed to sink the Baleares vessel back in 2005, when the Council of Calvia suggested the idea, See Mallorca reported.
Last week saw the proposals take a step closer to reality though, when the regional government voted in favour of establishing the site off the coast of Calvia, in the west of Mallorca.
After gaining a majority vote, the next step in the development will see the Tourism Commission turning to the Ministry of Defence to push the scheme forward.
According to the federation of diving centres for the Balearic Islands, an artificial reef would see high-spending holidaymakers entering the region.
However, socialist MP Bel Olivier has stressed that the fact the development will cost an estimated €2 million (£1.74 million) is cause for concern.
Calvia is a little town that can be found in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains in Mallorca and is in easy reach of such popular resorts as Palmanova and Magaluf.
