Mallorca holidays being given a makeover

New investment in Palma is transforming the island town into an even more attractive destination for Mallorca holiday makers.

That is according to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA), which suggested that buildings are being renovated and green spaces expanded.

Playa de Palma is one area that is enjoying particular focus, with a Dutch developer expected to unveil new plans for the area in 2010.

The news agency points out that the concept will include more greenery, a greater number of waterways, the removal of rundown buildings, park-like interior courtyards and a new rail link.

Margarita Najera, head of the consortium, told the DPA: "We want to become the first city district in the world which is climate-neutral."

She explained this will be achieved by improving the energy efficiency of buildings, adopting more environmentally-friendly modes of transport and making use of renewable energy.

Such a development could make the Mallorca holidays much more popular among eco-minded visitors to the island.
