Mallorca airport receives record passenger numbers

The number of people who passed through Son Sant Joan airport, the gateway to villas in Mallorca, hit record numbers last month.

During September, a total of 2,942,895 people made a stop-off at the Spanish island's travel hub, figures released by AENA, the Spanish airport holding company, has shown.

Such a statistic is an increase of 11.8 per cent when compared to the same month in 2010, as well as being the greatest number of passengers to visit Son Sant Joan airport in any September on record.

International flights accounted for 2.3 million of the tourists visiting the Mallorca travel hub, which is also a 14.3 per cent rise on last year's corresponding figures.

Fans of nature may be encouraged to take up stays in Mallorca villas in the near future when they hear of plans being put forward by the Arta Council.

According to See Mallorca, the body is hoping to widen the borders of the Llevant Nature Reserves, which already houses many miles of hilly terrain and remote beaches.
