Joan Miro Foundation, Mallorca
Art lovers visiting Mallorca will already have inextricably linked the island with one of its most famous residents, the sculptor, painter and iconoclast Joan Miro, who lived there for almost thirty years until his death in 1983.
The Pilar I Joan Miro Mallorca Foundation, just outside of Palma, hosts a selection of Miro's Mallorcan work.
The exhibits include paintings and drawings as well as personal correspondence and other biographical information from the artist.
The foundation began following the donation of his four studio workshops by the artist to the city of Palma in 1980, with the express intention that they be used after his death for creating art.
Following Miro's wishes, the workshops today provide a creative space for up-and-coming Mallorcan artists.
Miro is known as one of the leading lights of the Surrealist movement of the first half of the last century, which also includes Andre Breton and Salvador Dali.
Outside of the Fundacio Joan Miro in Barcelona, the Foundation hosts one of the largest collections of his work in the world. Its opening hours are from 10am-7pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 10am-3pm for Sundays and public holidays.
