Hispanic Day entertaining Mallorca holiday makers

People enjoying Mallorca villa holidays at the beginning of October will find plenty of fun and festivities on offer in the form of Hispanic Day.

The event, known as Dia de la Hispanidad to the island's locals, takes place on October 12th and is one of several national holidays enjoyed across all Spanish territories.

It is held every year in celebration of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492.

Festivities usually involve dancing and parades and take place alongside the Columbus Day celebrations enjoyed by much the Americas.

October is a busy month of celebrations for people on the island of Mallorca.

Centred on the city of Palma, the Festa de Virgin takes place on October 21st and involves copious amounts of singing and cake eating, among other things.

Columbus was a Genoese explorer whose trips across the Atlantic led to the European colonisation of most of the Americas.

History buffs on holiday in Mallorca may also wish to discover the island's own rich history - including its gothic cathedrals, medieval streets and the royal palace that once housed kings of the island.

In the Deja valley, visitors will find ancient temples and museums dating the human occupancy of the area, which spans back to the prehistoric age.
