Es Pontas and Santanyi, Mallorca
One of the most famous views of Mallorca is the spectacular natural stone arch of Es Pontas, to the island's south east.
Carved out by the seas to form a sheer arch, it is popular not just as a picture postcard view, but also as a great challenge for rockclimbers and abseilers, some of whom take their package holidays in Mallorca specifically to take it on.
The surrounding beaches at Cala Santanyi benefit not just from the fact that they form part of a peaceful, comparatively unspoilt area, but also from the pleasant bathing in the turquoise water.
The most well-known of the beaches is perhaps Cala Llombards, with another good bathing place nearby being the small, white-sanded beach of Cala d'es Moro. Surrounded by pine trees, it is an unusually secluded spot.
Santanyi itself is a town located around a kilometre inland, which hosts a lively market in the Plaza Mayor every Wednesday and Saturday.
