Columbus day: Mallorca
On October 12th Spain has a national holiday called 'Dia de la Hispanidad' or Hispanic day.
It commemorates the exact date when Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas, celebrations for the date take place throughout the country but what better place to celebrate it than gazing out onto the ocean from the cape Formentor in Mallorca?
The Cape Formentor in Mallorca, is on the north end of the island and is about four kilometres from Port de Pollenca.
The cliff climbs up to 384 metres above the Mediterranean Sea and is home of to the lighthouse of the Cape, reached by a long and winding road along the cliff edge giving the opportunity to stop for several jaw dropping views.
Much of the cape was formed by the wind and water, the steps, walls, and paths to the lighthouse were all built from the cliffs.
On clear days it is sometimes possible to see the island of Menorca, which is about 40 miles east of Mallorca, and the sandy beaches of Alcudia can also be seen in the South.
Holidaymakers can enjoy the costal walks up to and around the lighthouse and look out on the sea in the ways of great travellers like Columbus.
