Caving near Porto Cristo, Mallorca

Porto Cristo, a seaside town on Mallorca, will welcome adventurous visitors wishing to explore its famous caves which dot the island's east coast this summer.

First explored by acclaimed spelunker E.A. Martel in 1896, the limestone Coves del Drac, near Porto Cristo, proves a particularly big draw.

The dramatic stalagtites pointing directly down from the cavern's roof are spectacularly lit from below, lending the surroundings an even more eerie atmosphere. Classical music is also played in the big natural auditorium daily.

Europe's largest underground lake, named after Mr Martel, provides a focal point for the hour-long tours run daily in the cave.

Porto Cristo itself, set along a harbour, is a relatively newly-built village by local standards, dating back to the end of the nineteenth century.

Offering a quiet atmosphere and popular with families, it offers a good base for trips out to the caves.
