Book a Mallorca holiday and tour the walled city of Alcudia

Families looking for the best of both worlds on their Mallorca villa holiday should consider staying in the resort of Alcudia.

While the marina area is bustling, with numerous shops, restaurants and bars lining its sandy bay, the old part of the town is quiet and historic.

According to the See Mallorca website, the walled city is a "gem of a place" that is home to some interesting Roman ruins, including a former amphitheatre.

It's "maze" of narrowed streets is enclosed by medieval ramparts that have been carefully restored "as a mode of Mallorca's new tourist image".

Visitors enter the city through one of the two town gates, which are guarded by two ancient towers and a pair of huge palm trees.

Once within the walls, they can visit the Ca'n Torro library, the church of Sant Jaume and the Orator de Santa Anna, one of the island's oldest churches.

Then, at the Museu Monografic de Pollentia, tourists can learn more about the sites they have seen and the town's rich history.

Families can rent their own Mallorca villas in Alcudia, which is an hour away from the capital Palma for those who really want to get to grips with the island's culture.
