Ancient festival for Mallorca holiday makers

The Ball de les Aguiles, or Dance of the Eagles as it is also known, accompanies the ritual dance known as Sant Joan Pelos, or Hairy St John.

Celebrated six days after Easter, the event in Mallorca is colourful and entertaining and a procession begins at dusk after a mass in Plaza de la Iglesia.

The Aguiles parade in a procession that includes the statue of the Eucharist as well as a band, the parents of the Aguiles and children who have received first communion that year.

During the procession two young girls, dressed in white and covered in gold jewellery donated by local families, hold a huge eagle with a cardboard crown that is decorated with multi-coloured ribbons.

Two dances are performed, one inside the church and the other during the procession and both are accompanied by a large guitar and violin.

The dancer portraying Sant Joan Pelos is dressed a red cape and silk clothing and carries a cross and a lamb.

Families going on holiday to Mallorca can enjoy not only these exciting events but a relaxing time in a Mallorca villa.
