Timanfaya National Park attracts Lanzarote holiday makers

Thousands of tourists flocked to the Timanfaya National Park during their Lanzarote holidays last year to witness some exciting volcanic activity.

According to Fortnightly Tenerife News, around 1.6 million people visited the popular attraction in 2008.

Extending to 5,107 hectares on the western side of Lanzarote, Timanfaya is made up of volcanic soil and has been said to resemble a lunar landscape.

Shaped by volcanic eruptions in the 1700s and 1800s, the park is now a major tourist hotspot, attracting over a million visitors every year since 1993.

Volcanic activity still occurs under the ground and this is demonstrated by tour guides who pour water into bore holes that produce huge upsurges of steam.

Dry brush is also thrown into the holes, catching fire immediately as a result of the intense heat beneath the surface.

Holiday makers can also enjoy a meal in the mountains at the El Diablo restaurant, where food is cooked using geothermal heat.

Those hoping to take a tour of Timanfaya could rent a Lanzarote villa in Yaiza, which is close to the national park.

It boasts some amazing views across the volcanic landscape and is also just a short drive away from some of the busier resorts of Puerto Del Carmen and Playa Blanca, where a large selection of restaurants, cafes and bars can be found.
