Three Lanzarote beaches receive universal accessibility rating

A trio of beaches in Costa Teguise have been honoured with certificates for their universal accessibility offerings, which may encourage Brits to snap up Lanzarote villas in the region.

The coastlines of Playa Bastian, Playa Las Cucharas and Playa Los Charcos have all been awarded the rating, in a first for any beach across the whole of the Canary Islands.

Resorts are awarded the universal accessibility rating for the positive access they give to wheelchair users, as well as the number of facilities that are offered in close reach of the beach.

All three coastlines in Costa Teguise have undergone significant improvements over the past few months, including two bands of blue paint being created to assist those with visual difficulties and disruptive street furniture being removed.

Signposts have also been introduced to make it easier to find public facilities around the resorts, to further boost the appeal of the region.

News of the achievement follows on from research by ISTAC, the Canarian Institute of Statistics, which reveals that Lanzarote has achieved its best annual tourism figures in seven years.
