Telegraph writer recommends a Lanzarote holiday

Britons planning a Lanzarote holiday this year will be able to experience a destination that has "shed its down-market image and is now the pick of the Canaries", according to an article published in the Daily Telegraph.

Writer Max Davidson said that the modern Lanzarote is a far cry from the stereotypical image that emerged as a result of mass tourism in the past.

He described the island as a "charming and idiosyncratic destination" that can suit families planning a summer break as well as travellers searching for winter sun.

One experience Lanzarote villa guests are urged not to miss out on is sampling the local cuisine, which Mr Davidson claims is more than enough justification for a visit.

People who have a taste for seafood will find plenty of fish restaurants across the island.

There is also plenty to interest wine lovers, including the growing region of La Geria, which is located near Timanfaya National Park, a volcanic area full of dramatic landscapes.

Mr Davidson also recommended a trip to the mountain vantage point of Mirador del Rio, which offers a "spectacular view" across the sea to the island of Graciosa.
