Put aside your prejudices and book a Lanzarote holiday

Those who ignore the common stereotype of Lanzarote as a package holiday hotspot overrun with tourists will find that the island actually has a lot to offer away from the busy resorts.

According to journalist Zoe Dare Hall, visitors to Lanzarote need only drive a few minutes before they reach the island's stunning volcanic expanses and its inland villages made up of tiny whitewashed houses.

In an article for the Times newspaper, she said the movie Broken Embraces, which is set in Lanzarote, has done a lot for the island's reputation as a place of natural beauty.

"The sight of Penelope Cruz locked in a loving clinch on windswept El Golfo beach is enough to make many people rethink their idea of Lanzarote," she remarked.

And she pointed out that it was the island's "sombre monochrome beauty" that attracted director Pedro Almodovar to Lanzarote, where some impressive outdoor scenes were shot.

It is not just Mr Almodovar who decided that the island's volcanic landscape would act as a suitable backdrop for his movie.

Many of the exterior scenes in the 1966 film One Million Years BC starring Raquel Welch were also filmed on Lanzarote in the Timanfaya National Park.

Families renting Lanzarote villas in Yaiza will be able to marvel at this unique scenery, as the village overlooks the volcanoes.
