New species discovered in Lanzarote
Nature lovers could be keen to take up stays in Lanzarote villas once they hear of a new discovery on the popular Canary Island.
Scientists from seven different universities were led by biologist Alejandro Martinez to carry out research on a subterranean tunnel in Jameos del Agua.
During the scientific studies, the researchers have been able to discover a new species of the marine worm.
Considered to be a previously undiscovered form of Protodrilus, it is believed that the creatures are unique to the tunnel which runs through Jameos del Agua, Mr Martinez revealed at a press conference.
Features of the species include the fact that it measures just three centimetres in length and is able to swim through the tunnel's stationary water.
Meanwhile in neighbouring Tenerife, a team of volcanologists from the University of Leicester have unearthed remains of a significant landslide which occurred on the island thousands of years ago.
One of the volcanologists, Mike Branney, noted to those seeking a stay in Canary Island villas that "it is one of the world's best-preserved accessible examples of such an awesome phenomenon".
