Millions of people taking holidays in Spain 'via budget airlines'

New figures released by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce have given some insight into how people are travelling to the Canary Islands, such as to Lanzarote villas.

According to the organisation, 3.5 million people between January and June 2011 chose to visit the archipelago via low-cost airlines.

This number represents a significant 28.7 per cent jump when compared to the amount of people who opted for such flights during the first half of 2010.

Such a rise has also been reflected when it comes to people taking holidays in Spain during the initial six months of this year.

The Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce acknowledged that 20.7 million passengers chose budget airlines to complete a trip to their intended destination between January and June 2011, a 15.5 per cent increase from the same period last year.

Brits could be given more opportunities to visit villas in Lanzarote in the second half of 2011, after the Society for the External Promotion of Lanzarote revealed it is in discussions with operator Cosmos to determine the airline's promotional plans in relation to the Canary Island hot spot.
