Canary Islands record tourism boost
There has been an increase in tourism activity around villas in Lanzarote and the other Canary Islands, new research has highlighted.
In the Institute of Tourism Studies and Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism's latest Tourism Expenditure Survey, it was highlighted that an estimated 12 million people visited the popular Spanish archipelago in 2011.
Adding to this statistic is the fact that a total of €9.201 million (£7.687 million) had been spent by foreign tourists across the Canary Islands up to November 2011.
Such a figure is an increase of 12.9 per cent when compared to the same period last year.
Looking into the research, Ricardo Fernandez, the deputy minister of tourism for the Canary Islands government, acknowledged that it was "important" to maintain the positive statistics into this year.
In order to encourage more British holiday makers to the Spanish destinations in 2012, the Tourist Board of the Canary Islands displayed a promotional spot on four giant screens during London's New Year's Eve celebrations.
