Canary Island airports record tourism boost

More foreign tourists have enjoyed holidays in the Canary Islands in the past 12 months than previous years, new research has highlighted.

According to new statistics released by AENA, all four main destinations in the Spanish archipelago have seen their tourism figures boosted throughout 2011.

In Gran Canaria, for instance, a total of 10.5 million people passed through the island's main airport – an 11.1 per cent increase on 2010's figures.

The Souths Reina Sofia airport in Tenerife welcomed 8.6 million tourists throughout 2011 – a 17.6 per cent rise on 2010's passenger numbers – while Fuerteventura airport welcomed an 18.6 per cent boost, with 4.9 million people passing through the travel hub.

Furthermore, a 12.3 per cent increase in passenger figures was recorded at Lanzarote's airport during the past 12 months.

Holiday makers seeking a last minute break have been urged by TravelSupermarket's Bob Atkinson to book a stay in Lanzarote villas, with the expert noting to the Daily Mail that the island presents "consistently good pricing" throughout January.
