People renting a Lanzarote villa have the chance to enjoy some fantastic wines while holidaying on the Canary Island.

According to one wine expert, the island's Malvasia wine is "too cool not to share" and proves that great wines can be found in places outside of the traditional areas in France, mainland Spain and Australia.

Writing for Wine Spectator magazine, Harvey Steinman experienced the white wine in a blind tasting with a meal of seafood and vegetables.

"It had the vague spiciness typical of the Malvasia grape, but it also had a distinct minerality. It was dry, even crisp," the wine expert said, describing the sensations of his first sip.

"And it made a seamless match with a plate of butter-poached prawns and another plate of grilled Italian flat green beans."

Accounting for the uniqueness of the Bermejos Malvasia Seco Lanzarote 2008 which he had just tasted, Mr Steinman explained that while Lanzarote is part of the Spanish Canary Islands, it lies off the coast of Africa and its vines grow in volcanic craters.

The island's wine making tradition is more than 500 years old and authentic cultivation methods are still used to this day.
