Book a Lanzarote holiday and take in the island's stunning inland scenery

Those booking Lanzarote holidays will probably be planning a trip to the Timanfaya National Park to see the island's volcanoes.

If not, then they should be, as the area is offers some stunning scenery, according to travel journalist Ben Ross.

In an article for the Independent, he said that away from the coast, Lanzarote is dominated by a "spine of still-grumbling volcanoes".

"An artist's palette here would go heavy on browns, reds, golds and ochres; the brush strokes themselves would be bold, jagged, brutal," he remarked.

During his visit to the area, Mr Ross said he watched some exciting demonstrations of geothermal heat.

Seconds after a guide poured water into a crack in the ground, a geyser of super-heated steam shot upwards from inside the earth.

This energy is also put to good use in a restaurant atop the mountains where heat from the ground is used to barbeque the food.

Families hoping to see the Timanfaya National Park for themselves could rent a Lanzarote villa in Yaiza, which overlooks the dramatic volcanic landscape.

Set amongst the countryside, Yaiza is a quiet village with a handful of bars and restaurants, although the busier resorts of Playa Blanca and Puerto Del Carmen are just a 15-minute drive away.
