'Lanzarote holidays' a popular internet search term in January

Increasing numbers of Brits are looking at the possibility of a Lanzarote villa holiday this summer, new figures have suggested.

According to Skyscanner figures, the Canary Island was the eighth most searched-for destination in terms of flights during January, beating destinations such as Amsterdam, Bangkok and Geneva.

Barry Smith, the website's founder and business director, said that locations around the world are starting to "rise from the ashes of recession".

"Spain is still the top dog by a long shot, but Portugal, Italy and Cyprus have a significant slice of the market and Turkey and Thailand are nipping at its heels," he commented.

While Spain topped Skyscanner's January search rankings, it was also revealed that searches for The Algarve, Cyprus and Turkey were also on the up.

Notable entries include Palma in Mallorca, the fifth most searched for destination, Faro, which was in fourth place and Paphos, which was in 16th position.

Earlier this month, Ryanair confirmed that it will launch flights to Lanzarote from the southern Irish city of Cork in June.
