Tunnels in Ibiza prove existence of civil war hideaway

Found underneath many of the prominent streets of San Antonio, the tunnels have been stuff of legend until they were revealed recently.
Three tunnels were built under the town in 1936 and residents built them to hide from the armies fighting in Spain if they ever invaded the island.
According to reports from the Ibiza Sun, the tunnels were found by Antonio Ramon Costa as he was extending the basement of his restaurant.
He believes the tunnels can hold over 100 people and islanders would take shelter whenever the sound of planes was heard.
It is not yet known if the tunnels will be opened up to visitors but the findings confirm the rumours of tunnels under San Antonio to be true.
The rebels eventually toppled the government of the Second Spanish Republic in 1939 and a dictatorship followed.
