Dalt Vila, Ibiza
Ibiza Town's Dalt Vila complex - literally meaning "high town" - could well be one of the most fascinating places on the island.
Located within the fortifications of a medieval castle, it includes battlements, tunnels and passageways which climb the hill overlooking the town - a city within a city, a labyrinth of narrow streets in which visitors frequently lose themselves.
Once you enter Dalt Villa through a huge stone portal, complete with drawbridge, a sweeping vista of high ramparts and terraces, open squares and cobbled courtyards opens up before the visitor.
Restaurants, cafes and gift shops, as well as hotels and private chapels can also be found within the fortifications, as the hill is climbed.
Particular highlights of the journey within the fortress include the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Snows, with its giant clock, and the archaeological museum set in the Carthaginaian necropolis.
A favourite time for visitors and locals alike to climb to the top of the ramparts is at dusk or in the evenings, as the lights of Ibiza Town are turned on below, offering a spectacular view out over the harbour.
