Weakened dollar 'can tempt people to stay in villas in Florida'

More people will travel to and stay in the US next year – potentially in locations such as a villa in Florida – because of the weakening dollar, believes an expert.

Sean Tipton, a spokesperson for ABTA – The Travel Association, suggests the most popular destinations across the North Atlantic will lure more visitors than ever in 2011.

He says the dollar is currently in decline against sterling and each time this happens the result is the same – a surge in Britons travelling to the States.

"If this trend continues, our traditional favourites such as Florida, Las Vegas and California will do very well in 2011," Mr Tipton states.

A villa in Florida could be a particularly tempting prospect for holiday makers, especially if the exchange rate makes such a property more affordable than before.

The expert's comments follow a prediction made by Jeremy Cook, chief economist at World First, who recently said the dollar will reach a rate of 1.74 against the pound within 12 months.
