Take a Florida holiday to visit some of America's best beaches

People planning to do some relaxing by the sea during an overseas break this year might be tempted to arrange a Florida villa holiday to visit beaches that have been ranked among the best in the US.

Every year since 1991, Dr Stephen P Leatherman of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research has published a list of the best beaches in America.

The ranking is based on 50 different criteria, ranging from the quality of the sand and water to safety and environmental management.

In this year's list, Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Florida was ranked the second best in the country behind Coopers Beach in Southampton, New York.

The coastal hotspot boasts "some of the finest, whitest sand in the world" as well as "clear, warm waters" that are ideal for swimming, according to Dr Leatherman.

Travellers planning a Florida villa holiday this year can also pay a visit to Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne, which made it into the list in tenth place.

"Clear, emerald-coloured waters" and a nearby lighthouse offering "breathtaking" views were among the factors that contributed to this beach featuring in the ranking.
