Spot endangered right whales off Florida coast

Individuals planning to rent a villa in Florida next month may be keen to hear about the natural wildlife found off the coast between Jacksonville and Cape Canaveral.

According to VisitFlordia.com, some 75 northern right whales sightings are recorded between December and March each year along the coastline.

The mammals, which grow to be around 55ft long and weigh 70 tons, are thought to be endangered as scientists believed there are only 490 left.

However, monitoring work carried out by volunteers and scientists over the last decade has helped ensure their numbers are on the rise.

Right whales spend the summer off the coast of New England and Nova Scotia, before migrating to the Florida coastline in the winter months.

Tourists may be lucky enough to spot baby calves, as many of the females give birth and nurse their youngsters in these waters before heading north again in March.

According to National Geographic, right whales are the rarest of all large whales and can be distinguished by their "enormous" heads that measure up to one-third of their total body length.
