Rent a Gulf Coast villa to see a different side of Florida

Those put off Orlando villa holidays by the large theme parks and the Disney attractions should try Florida's Gulf Coast instead.

In an article for the Mirror, travel journalist Chris Thorne said this particular part of the Sunshine State is "a world away from Mickey Mouse".

With unspoilt sandy beaches and an abundance of wildlife, the Gulf Coast is likely to suit those looking for peaceful relaxation.

During his holiday, Mr Thorne took boat trips out to the islands around Tampa and Fort Myers, which he said seemed more Caribbean than American.

Here, he spotted dolphins and stingrays, as well as rare exotic birds.

Even the Gulf Coast's nightlife has more of an "old-world charm" than Orlando, according to Mr Thorne.

He recommended a visit to Ybor City, which offers a "refreshing change of pace from the beaches and malls" with its "exotic blend of aromas, sights and sounds".

Of course there are plenty of attractions in the Gulf Coast area for those who do want to visit them.

Lowry Park Zoo is home to a manatee hospital as well as numerous animal exhibits, while the Busch Gardens theme park is great for thrill seekers.

Those renting Gulf Coast villas in New Port Richey will be close to both Tampa and Ybor.

They will also be well-placed to visit the area's many beaches, including the Hudson and Pine Island beaches, or take boat trips out to islands such as Anaclote, and Durney Key.
