Orlando church to become basilica for Florida holiday makers
Families heading off on a Florida villa holiday to Orlando and hoping to go to church during their stay will soon be able to visit a new basilica.
A national shrine called Mary, Queen of the Universe, has been named a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI, making it one of only 63 in the United States.
The 200-seat church is aimed at the millions of tourists who flock to Orlando every year to enjoy Florida villa holidays and visit the theme parks.
It was built in 1993, but its ministry was founded in 1975 following the opening of Disney World - Orlando's top tourist attraction.
Recognising the importance to some people of attending Mass while on holiday, a priest used to visit hotels in the area.
Now the new basilica, which is just 1.5 miles away from the entrance to Disney World will act as a central meeting point for tourists from all over the world who wish to worship together.
Those hoping to stay somewhere close to both the basilica and to Disney World could rent an Orlando villa in Legacy Park, which is just ten minutes away from the theme park.
It is also close to major interstates, meaning that all of the other main attractions and shopping outlets are within easy reach.
