Oil spill 'not putting Brits off Florida holidays'

The recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has not prevented British people from wanting to take Florida holidays, a local tourism spokesperson has revealed.

BP is currently working on containing and cleaning up the oil leak, which began in April following an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig.

Kate Burgess of the Florida Keys Tourism Council told Travel Daily that people from the UK are still willing to arrange Orlando holidays and trips to Miami because they are aware that these destinations have not been affected by the spill.

"There have been very few cancellations from the UK market," she said.

"All anecdotal evidence from UK agents and operators shows that the Brits market is not affected as the main focus is on Orlando and Miami."

Ms Burgess' organisation recently teamed up with Visit Florida to launch an advertising campaign designed to keep people informed regarding the leak.

One reason families could be determined to take an Orlando holiday this year is to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the new attraction at Universal Orlando Resort.
