Nearly 47m people take Orlando holidays in 2009

Orlando holidays were a particularly popular choice among travellers from all over the world last year, with some 46.6 million people visiting the destination.

The Orlando Tourism Bureau revealed that this figure means the city was the most visited destination in the US in 2009.

While the overall number of visitors represented a fall of 4.7 per cent from the previous year, the decline was not as severe as the 9.9 per cent drop that had previously been predicted.

The figures from the Office of Travel and Tourism Industries show that the UK was the second largest international market for the destination, with 831,000 British travellers taking Orlando holidays last year.

Canada was the city's leading source of international tourism, with some 865,000 visitors.

People planning to take an Orlando villa holiday this year will be able to pay a visit to some of the destination's world-famous attractions, such as the Walt Disney World Resort, SeaWorld and Aquatica.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will provide a new experience for visitors to Universal Orlando Resort when it opens in June.
