NASA preparing to launch Juno spacecraft from Florida

People who are planning on taking a last-minute trip to villas in Florida will be able to see the launch of a NASA spacecraft if they travel in the next week.

The solar-powered satellite Juno has been fixed to the Atlas rocket as it prepares to launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on August 5th.

Florida Today reported that Juno, which is costing NASA $1.1 billion (£673 million), is set to blast off between 11:34 and 12:33 local time, as it begins a five-year trip to Jupiter.

Jan Chodas, the Juno project manager at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, commented: "We're all very happy to see that we've reached this point in our development."

Last week, those staying in Florida villas were able to see the return of space shuttle Atlantis to the Sunshine State's Kennedy Space Center.

The mission marked an end of an era, as the journey was the last scheduled flight of its kind by the US.
