Head to the Venice of America on a Gulf Coast holiday

There is plenty for Florida holiday makers to do on the Gulf Coast, but those who have time may wish to drive across to the east coast to visit the city known as the Venice of America.

According to OK! magazine, Fort Lauderdale is home to 330 miles of inland canals known as intracoastal waterways, which tourists can explore by hopping onto a water taxi.

"Pick up an all-day pass which will let you jump on and off just like a tour bus," the publication recommends.

It points out that the city has a laid-back beach vibe and is known for being a yachting mecca, with more than 40,000 resident boats sitting in its marinas.

With around 4,000 restaurants, a palm tree-lined seafront and numerous shopping opportunities, it could be a great place to head for a day trip.

Visitors could also spend some time spotting movie locations, as several films, including There's Something About Mary, In Her Shoes and Marley and Me have all been filmed in Greater Fort Lauderdale.

Gulf Coast villas in Naples could be a good choice for those hoping to head over to the city, as Interstate 75 will take them straight there.
