Greater Fort Lauderdale 'popular for winter holidays in Florida'

More people seem to have been heading to villas in Florida for their winter holidays, if statistics from one of the state's airports is anything to go by.

In signs of what may be to come for the warmer months ahead, Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) has recorded total traffic for January as being 5.1 per cent above that of the same time in 2010.

This was in spite of almost 300 flights being cancelled as a result of severe weather hitting parts of the US.

Meanwhile, a 16.3 per cent rise in international traffic was recorded at FLL, marking the 17th month in a row of positive growth for passenger traffic in total.

Nicki Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, commented: "We entered 2011 with optimism, convinced that Greater Fort Lauderdale offers a high-value, multi-faceted tourism experience with tremendous appeal to a broad cross-section of domestic and international travellers."

Recently, it was revealed that Greater Fort Lauderdale had seen a 2.6 per cent increase in visitors over 2010, as people taking up Florida villas opted for this appealing destination.
