Florida boasts a host of art attractions

Florida has much more to offer than theme parks and idyllic weather and is emerging as a new destination for culture lovers.

Writing for the Star, Peter Goddard explained the state is making efforts to open itself up to a different type of holiday maker.

"St Petersburg can now brag of having its very own museum walk, which curves along the city's harbour front area leading to its main pier," Mr Goddard said.

He also produced a helpful guide to the top art attractions which should not be missed on a Florida villa holiday.

The St Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, which is currently holding an exhibition of Salvador Dali's work, is one for the more traditional arts fans.

Also in the resort is the Dali Museum, which "is in itself a destination with its gravity-challenging 'Glass Enigma' molded glass excrescence draped over its exterior".

Tampa and Miami both also have their own museums of art, the former of which was also said to boast an antiques collection.

Fort Lauderdale, meanwhile, pays its tribute to the arts during the Las Olas Art Festival at West Venice Boulevard. The event is held each March and pulls in around 150,000 visitors.
