Campaign launched to reassure Gulf Coast holiday visitors

The Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau (VCB) has launched a campaign to reassure people planning Gulf Coast holidays that the region has not been affected by the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Tourism organisations representing Fort Myers and Sanibel are creating a series of television adverts to address misconceptions and inform visitors that the area is still fully open for business.

Nearly five million people visit the Lee County area during Florida holidays every year, providing the "lifeblood" of the local economy, said Tamara Piggott, executive director of the VCB.

She added: "We want visitors to know that our doors are open and our shores are clean."

Ms Piggott went on to say that Fort Myers and surrounding areas provide a "one-of-a-kind experience", offering "pristine beaches" and a range of natural environments to explore.

Holiday makers staying in Gulf coast villas can take the opportunity to try some of the outdoor activities on offer in the region, from following nature and hiking trails to going sea kayaking or fishing.
