Book a Gulf Coast holiday and hunt seashells

The beach is likely to be a prominent feature of a Gulf Coast holiday in Florida and there are plenty of shells, pebbles and other trinkets to be found.

Fortunately, holiday makers will know exactly where to look and what to look for if they head to the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum in Sanibel Island.

Here, experts run a special How, When and Where to Find Shells workshop, teaching tourists the shell-hunting basics.

More than 300 species of shell can be found in the shallow water surrounding the island, which is situated opposite Fort Myers.

The museum is dedicated entirely to shells and features over 30 exhibits, each telling the story of molluscs from various parts of the world.

Workshops take place every Tuesday morning, so families renting Gulf Coast villas in Fort Myers can take a quick trip across to Sanibel Island, which is just a ten-minute drive away.

Later, they could put their newfound shell collecting skills to the test with a walk along the local Fort Myers Beach.

The resort boasts a wide variety of amenities for families, with plenty of shops and restaurants.
