The Sunshine State is renowned for its oranges and Florida villa holiday makers can find out why at Mixon Fruit Farms in Bradenton on the Gulf Coast.

Families can see how Florida's oranges and grapefruit are grown and cultivated, sampling the produce for themselves.

From freshly squeezed orange juice to orange swirl ice cream and homemade citrus fudge, there's plenty on offer.

The Orange Blossom Express tram will take visitors on a tour of the orange groves where they will learn the secrets of successful fruit growing and hear all about the health benefits of citrus fruits.

The grounds are vast and are also home to a children's maze, a wetlands pond and a wildlife rescue centre which provides care for a number of injured native birds, mammals and reptiles.

Here, tourists can talk to wildlife rehabilitator Justin Matthews about his work and the special relationship he shares with the animals in his care, as well as meeting the creatures themselves.

Families hoping to visit Mixon Fruit Farms can rent their own Gulf Coast villas in Bradenton, allowing them to reach the attraction easily.

Other local hotspots include the beaches at nearby Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key, as well as the town of Sarasota.
