Winter holidays in Cyprus 'too hot for ice skating'

Those shivering in their homes as the big freeze sweeps across Britain may consider heading overseas for some sunshine.

Taking a holiday in Cyprus may appeal in this case, as the island's ice rink is actually suffering because of the heat.

According to the Cyprus Mail, the attraction is struggling to keep chill as northern Europe experiences some of the most extreme weather conditions for decades.

Situated outdoors, the rink in Paphos has started to melt ahead of the Christmas period for which it was created, with the guard and ice master of company Cyprus on the Ice, Lubos Salnac, telling the news source "during the day as the sun is so strong, the top of the ice is being turned to water".

The weather means it is not currently able to open to visitors until 15:00 local time and Mr Salnac advises skaters to come at around 17:00, as he continues to hope for cooler conditions.

Meanwhile, Agnieszka Gratza wrote in the Daily Telegraph recently that she recommends staying in a villa in Cyprus as one way of escaping the sub-zero temperatures in the UK for some winter sun.
