Tourist statistics revealed, Cyprus
Statistics for tourism last year in Cyprus have recently been released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat).
Cystat's report showed that a total of 1.5 million visitors came to the island for the first half of 2006, a slight increase over the year preceding.
The figures also showed that Cypriots increasingly prefer to holiday on their own island, with departures decreasing by 0.7 per cent.
Demographic breakdowns of tourist provide a good insight into who typically travels to Cyprus: 85.7 per cent of tourists are from Europe.
Of this total, fully 57 per cent are from the UK, with Germany the next largest group, far behind on 6.8 per cent.
The study shows that Cyprus earned almost £430 million from tourism alone in the period, up four per cent on 2005 and confirming the tourist industry as one of the most important to the national economy.
According to the report, buying a holiday home or villa is also on the rise, reflected in the current construction boom on the island.
