Sample local wine on a Cyprus villa holiday

A Cyprus villa holiday might be the perfect getaway for wine lovers.

The island is home to a number of wineries that produce wines from locally grown grapes and could offer a great excuse for a day trip while staying at a villa in Cyprus.

One of these establishments, Fikardos, can be found in the village of Mesogi on the western coast, not far from Paphos. Visitors to Mesogi will find they can take in spectacular views of the nearby city thanks to its elevated position.

It was founded by Theodoros Fikardos in 1988 and was one of the first wineries to blend Xynisteri with an imported variety and use Cabernet Sauvignon red grape varieties to produce rose wine.

According to George Kassianos of the Cyprus Mail, Fikardos "has been at the forefront of the rise in popularity of the independent wineries that has taken place over the last 25 years".

Highlights for those buying wine from this producer include the 2009 Fikardos Xilogefiro Chardonnay Fume and the 2008 Fikardos Shiraz, the writer says.
